USB Recording

UCG Musician. I suppose this isn't technically a Sonar question but it's related!

Jss 2 scheme of work

I may be purchasing a mixer in the near future. I am not sure what advantages a USB mixer has over an analog unit. My hardware includes two MIDI sound sources and a microphone pretty basic. Right now they are simply low level analog inputs to a sound card and I often use this setup to record audio and later convert to MP3 files in Sonar.

But there are always problems with input and gain levels and the microphone must be treated as a different type of input on the sound card's software mixer user interface. Is there validity to it and, if so, why? But I can add my 2 cents about your audio device the Soundblaster If you're serious about using Sonar and making music that will compete sonically and technically, if not financially, with other commercial recordings - using a Soundblaster is not the way to go.

Imagine having a rocket ship run on pea soup? Pea soup is good.

But it won't run a rocket ship very well. Soundblasters are good. They let you playback mp3's and do gaming. As for serious recording devices? Ok -- that was a little more than 2 cents.

Well, I suppose I haven't considered that but as long as you brought it up, what sort of sound card and at what cost is appropriate for this type of application? Can you please elaborate further? What distinguishes an audio interface from a USB mixer? I'm trying to simply "mix" analog sounds and input a stereo signal to a sound card. Max Output Level: If you're doing a lot of multi-tracking or are installed at a club it can make a lot of sense.

Then, if you needed to, you could just get a small mixer like a Mackie and hook it up to the interface's various inputs and be rockin'. CJaysMusic yuor better off getting an audio interface and do away with the mixer idea.Updated May 04, by Daniel Imperiale. If you have relatively simple mixing needs, then the Behringer U-Phoria appx. It's not the best option if you eventually want to expand the capabilities of your home studio, but it's an excellent companion for tracking an instrument or two on the go.

It's a great choice for church services, live concerts, speaking events, and theatrical performances. Its smart layout promotes a fluid workflow, but certain aspects of its design are a bit outdated.

Its microphone inputs and preamps are designed to create a signal with next to no noise. It is equipped with 10 mono and four stereo lines for versatility, as well as a responsive three-band, swept-mid-frequency EQ.

It also has a seven-band graphic equalizer to add a little dynamism to your sound. It offers four phantom-powered preamps, and creates a warm sound with its neoclassic equalizers. A lot of little details add up to make the Presonus StudioLive Performance 16 appx.

May 01, The Behringer U-Phoria previously included has been upgraded from its single-channel model to the dual-channel. After all, without more than a single channel, a device ceases to be a mixer and is merely an audio interface.

The Numark DJ mixer has been completely removed, as upon further consideration it didn't seem to fit the category as exactly as the rest of the mixers included. We also needed to make room for the exceptional Presonus StudioLive 16 with its intuitive layout and impeccably clean audio signal, making its debut here at number one and unseating the Behringer X That Behringer model took a big dive despite its superb preamps and colorful, easy-to-follow layout, mainly because its iPhone jack is too far outdated to be considered very useful.

This extra step in the process served to condition your signal in a way that many engineers found excessive. One of the most crucial connections in any modern studio is the one that runs between your mixer and your computer. In the early days of digital home recording, as software like ProTools was on the rise, this connection point usually consisted of a stereo signal carried across a pair of XLR cables and into an intermediary — the now defunct M—Box in the case of ProTools — and from there into a computer via FireWire cable.

In order to get the analog information converted into digital media for manipulation within editing software, there was a trade off. More often than not, some bit of the quality of your signal would be sacrificed. In the decades since then, digital signal conversion has become significantly more sophisticated, and many manufacturers of mixing tables have incorporated high-quality signal conversion into their mixing boards. For you the consumer, that means one less piece of hardware to purchaseas well as the likelihood that the conversion taking place is designed with the specific timbre of your board in mind.

Now, connecting your mixer to your computer is as simple as using hard drive or any other piece of USB connected Hardware. You'll find that in modern models, latency and noise are at an all-time low, while clarity and flexibility are higher than ever.

Purchasing a USB mixer is a process that operates along the same lines as purchasing any mixer, so comparing these items should be relatively straightforward. You will find, however, that there are certain features, capabilities, and other specifications that deeply distinguish one model from the next, and a faithful understanding of those differences is the only way to ensure that you'll be truly happy with your purchase.During these challenging times, we guarantee we will work tirelessly to support you.

It is always recommended to use a power conditioner - if present - to minimize signal noise. Always use a surge protector. Always use your computers provided USB ports, as a lot of data can bottleneck if you attempt to chain too many devices on the same USB port.By Tee Morris, Chuck Tomasi. You also need inputs for more microphones and full control over these multiple microphones.

Along with good microphones, you will want to invest in a mixing board. What a mixing board or mixer does for your podcast is open up the recording options, such as multiple hosts or guests, recording acoustic instruments, and balancing sound to emphasize one voice over another or balance both seamlessly.

You see mixers at rock concerts and in behind-the-scenes documentaries for the film and recording industry. Before you take your mixer out of its packing, make sure you have room for it somewhere on the desk or general area where you intend to podcast. An ideal reach for your mixer is a short one. But instead of calling them studios, these partitions are called tracks. A mixing board provides mono tracks and stereo tracks, and you can use any of those tracks for input or output of audio signals.

No matter the make or model, mixing boards are outrageously versatile. Multiple microphones are the best option when you and your friends gather around to record.

A real advantage of the mixer is that it allows you to adjust the audio levels of those multiple inputs independently so they sound even.

You may also be wondering about all those wacky knobs on a mixing board. Some of the knobs deal with various frequencies in your voice and can deepen, sharpen, or soften the qualities of your voice, and perhaps even help filter out surrounding background noise which is the sound of an empty room because even in silence, there is noise.

The knobs on the mixing board that are your primary concern are the ones that control your volume or levels, as the board labels them. The higher the level, the more input signal your voice gains when recording.

If one of your tracks is being used for output, the level dictates how loud the playback through your headphones is. The best way to handle sound is to set your levels before podcasting. Now that you have your desk cleaned off mind the dust bunnies! And then make certain you can see the following items:. USB and FireWire mixers are so similar in setup that you can use the same steps for both kinds of mixers.

Restart your computer if necessary. Now with headphones on your head and some toying around, you can set levels on your mixer good for recording. Before filing away the reference manual that came with your mixer, be sure you know how things work.

My question is what will i need, cables and suchhow do i wire it to my computer, and how do i set it up in Ableton so that i am able to record and do basic mixing on the board. Any tips, help or insight it greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance, Jacob. Please let me know Thanks. A lot of USB mixers only allow you to send a summed stereo mix to your DAW, rather than the individual channels, so shop carefully and avoid the lower price ranges where this is typical.

Are you thinking a digital or analog mixer? Any mixer will let you record into Live, but not so many will let you bring the channels back out of Live for mixing on the hardware. Digital mixers are easier to find with this feature, but expect this feature to increase the price as well. For analog mixers, it's even more expensive. There are also USB devices that allow you to control Live for mixing, so if you're just looking for the mixing experience and you're happy with your current audio interface, you could look at something like that.

Are you going to need groups, inserts, or aux buses? How many of each? One of the big advantages of hardware mixers is all the routing options it opens up for any other hardware you own or plan to own. A USB mixer will replace your existing audio interface, so you probably have all the cables you need. The reason I prefer this is because i'm old school and like to have "component" based solutions instead of all-in-one solution.

This allows easy upgrade of a single component as time goes on and tech changes. Then of course it is one thing to have all this, but it may be geared more towards recording and could have a big latency when trying to use it in a live situation. The cost can skyrocket as you start adding more things you need it to do.

That is the kind of mixer I would have killed for 15 years ago even now I love analogue VU meters and a button-for-each-function layout. Contract to how it keeps kicking after every year, the old Presonus Firebox I used for so long simply needed replacing because Presonus decided they didn't want to make drivers for Win10 and though I managed to hack the Win7 drivers, it never worked as it did under Win7 so I was forced to upgrade a perfectly working interface which I now keep in a box as I cannot even really sell it.

One of the reasons i'm very reluctant to do an all in one digital mixer because chances are in 10 years time it may not be supported and i'd have to replace everything.

Replacing over capacitors in that Tascam has brought my soldering skills back up to aerospace-grade level after decades of disuse, so all the better for my Eurorack kits. My main concern is being able to mix and control my levels on the hardware.

I want to have to use my mouse the least amount possible. If you want to listen to music on your Mac, you either suffer its built-in speakers, or you plug a speaker into the headphone jack.

But what if you want to get sound into you Mac? Then you should switch to USB. In fact, using a USB audio interface is as easy as plugging in a pair of headphones, only better. Two reasons — quality, and flexibility. But neither does a Mac or iPhone have DA converters anywhere near the quality of a standalone audio device. Adding a USB audio box moves the D-A conversion into a purpose-built unit, with usually better sound as a result.

A USB audio interface, will also come with a bunch of its own ports. These may be designed to send audio to a pair of powered speakers, or to accept an input from a microphone, guitar, or other instrument.

And, importantly, there may be more than one input and output:. These are popular with podcasters, for example. At the other end of the list is something like a mixing console, which will have many inputs, allowing your to hook up, say, 16 different inputs and have them all piped into your GarageBand app.

For best results, hook it direct to a USB port on your Mac. USB hubs can cause complications, and even malfunctions. If not, then plug the port adapter in too. Using your new interface is even easier. Just mouse up to the menubar and click the little volume icon. This will include your new USB audio interface.

If your audio device has a volume knob on it, you use that instead. Depending on the audio device, you may have several routing options. For instance, the device may have inputs as well as outputs. You can choose these in the same volume menu item as before.

Just press the Option key when you click it, to see the extra options. If you prefer, you can also find all of these choices in the System Preferences Sound tab. You can also get quite a bit more advanced. This does what it says it does, and lets you configure some more advanced options. For instance, your device might allow you to choose different sample rates for audio conversion.

The app comes with a free trial, so you should definitely check it out. The general gist is that you can easily select input and output devices, as well as a device for interface sound effects, and also control the volume of each of these individually, right there in the menubar menu. My guess is that the answer is either hell yes, or hell no, with little in between.

That means that a class-compliant device just works, without a driver.Menu Menu. Search Everywhere Threads This forum This thread. Search titles only. Search Advanced search…. Everywhere Threads This forum This thread. Search Advanced….
